FW: What is CEU - a small briefing ?

Hi All,

This is a few lines I though, I would share with you all, the below article is related with Generic CEU.

CEU - Continuing Education Unit

What are Continuing Education Units (CEUs)?

Courses designed for Continuing Education Unit (CEU) credit are intended to serve the diverse needs of adult learners and to provide them with an alternative form of instruction based upon a nationally accepted standard unit of measure.  The CEU is used to calculate the accrual and share information on an individual’s participation in non-academic credit, continuing education courses. One CEU equals ten contact hours of participation in organized continuing education/training experience under responsible, qualified direction and instruction.

Are CEUs the same as College Credit?

CEUs and college credit are not the same.  According to the International Association for Continuing Education and Training, CEUs are usually awarded for short duration learning events, which are not part of an academic degree program.  CEUs can not be awarded for training or education for which college credit is granted.  The CEU, however, when included in an individual’s portfolio along with work experience, may be evaluated by some colleges and universities who assess prior learning experience.

Why Should I Take CEU Courses?

Many professional and trade associations require individuals to participate in some form of continuing education as a requirement to maintain their certification or license.  The number of CEU courses required to maintain a certification or license vary by profession.  In some cases, an individual state or regulatory agency may have to approve a course before it will accept the CEU as meeting its requirements.  Learners looking to take a course in order to meet continuing education and/or training requirements are advised to check with their respective licensing/association authority prior to registering for the course.  In some cases, and when included in an individual’s portfolio, CEU courses may also be evaluated by some colleges and universities who assess prior learning experience.

How are CEU Credits Awarded?

CEUs are offered in accordance with the following general guidelines: 1 CEU = 10 Contact Hours.  1 CEU = 10 PDH (Professional Development Hours).  For distance education or training, contact hours are defined as the average number of hours required by several representative learners to complete the program.  A learner may not receive a CEU or CEUs and academic credit for the same course.  CEUs are not transferable or retroactive under any circumstance (i.e.: one cannot request to change from academic credit to CEU after the start of a course or completion of a course).
